- SNACK
- Different ways to sort and compare objects (comparing attributes such as
colour, size, texture...). - Patterns in nature, clothing,
structures, or in stories. - Point out and listen for the
sound of the letters S, A, T or I.
Your child should bring at least 2 nutritious snacks such as fruit, vegetables, yogurt, etc. each day. If you wish, your child may bring juice boxes, drink containers, or order from our milk program. Pop or other sugary drinks should not be sent as beverages for your child at school. Since hydration is so important, the students will be encouraged to drink water frequently, either from the fountain or water bottles brought from home.
LUNCH
A healthy, balanced lunch will provide the students with the energy they need. We ask that fast food not be brought into the classroom for your child during their lunch time, but please feel free to take your child out for lunch (between 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m.) should you want to treat them. Hot lunches are offered on Wednesdays, sponsored by St. Mark's parent council. More information regarding hot lunch will follow.
We have students in our class with severe peanut allergies, so when packing your child's snacks and lunch, please remember St.Mark school is a NUT FREE ENVIRONMENT.
SHINING STARS
We are a classroom full of stars! A student has been randomly chosen each week to be our “Shining Star”. Our Shining Star Program begins next week. As Shining Star, your child will receive a note in his/her Ziploc to advise you that it is your child’s turn, and ask you for your support in sending some special items to school to help celebrate your little star. The Shining Star has special responsibilities and privileges in the daily life of our classroom. One of the exciting aspects of being the Shining Star is to share several photographs and a couple special belongings which will be used as tools to introduce him/herself to the classroom friends, and to aid in the development of oral language skills.
THANK YOU!
A sincere thank you to all who have sent in boxes of Kleenex and rolls of paper towels to our classroom. Your generosity is much appreciated.
CORN ROAST AND MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT
On Wednesday, September 17th, St. Mark Catholic School will be hosting a corn roast and open house for all of our families. The corn roast begins at 5:30 behind the school. At 6:30, families will be invited to tour their children’s classrooms and meet their teachers. We are hoping that you are able to join us that evening.
LIBRARY
St.Mark’s library facility is place where imagination and learning run wild, thanks to our talented librarian Ms. Mason. We will begin our visits to the library next Wednesday afternoon.
FRIENDLY FRIDAYS
Each Friday that we are together in school, we will enjoy the excitement of Friendly Fridays! On that day, each child is assigned a special friend within the class with whom they will be given special opportunities to play, solve, write, eat, or build together. Friendly Fridays enables the children to pursue relationships with classmates with whom they might not otherwise have chosen to spend their time. This is one of a number of ways that we develop a real sense of community within our classroom.
BIG BUDDIES
Later this month we will be meeting our Big Buddies from Mrs. Perquin’s grade six class. About every two weeks we will get together on Fridays to do special “Buddy Work”. Like Friendly Fridays, working with our Big Buddies also builds a strong sense of community and belonging, and helps foster positive relationships with older students in the school.
I LOVE MY SCHOOL SHOES
We have been reading several of Eric Litwin’s Pete the Cat picture books. We are currently building our own book about our school shoes. This book will be sent home with a new student every night, and we request that you help your child remember to bring the book back the following day, so the next child in line can have their turn. Thank you for your assistance with this activity.
Literacy
In September we will be working on the letters “S,” “A,” “T,” and “I.” Each Monday, please bring in one item from home that begins with the letter of the week. Please review the letters and sounds with your child at home. It is important to reinforce what we are learning in school at home, so please read to your child each evening. While reading together, consider asking your child to find the letter of the week and practice the sound together.
"I Can Read" Poetry Booklet
Students will have a personal “I Can Read” poetry booklet that will contain familiar words from prayers poems, songs and rhymes that we will learn in our classroom. Each prayer, poem, song, or rhyme is first learned orally. Nothing supports the young student more as a successful reader, writer and speaker than building a repertoire of oral language. Calling upon the sounds of this language during our shared reading time, your child will begin connecting the spoken word to the printed text. Your child will take their Poetry Books home every Friday and they should be returned to class on Monday so that we can continue to practice here at school and update the book on a weekly basis.
JUST A REMINDER...
We would ask that you do not allow your child to bring toys from home to school. They may be lost or broken and can sometimes lead to disputes between classmates. The exception to this rule will be on the days that your child is invited to bring in items for show and tell. More information on “SHARING DAY” will follow.
ACTIVITIES AT HOME
We know that YOU, the parents, are your child's first and most powerful teachers and role models. Your deep understanding of your child enables you to offer learning opportunities that are not only meaningful and supportive, but that also fit perfectly in the context of your child's daily life. To build on, and support the learning at school, consider bringing the following items into conversations in car rides, at the dinner table, while tidying up, or while out on walks:
Thank you for your continued support!
